The user is the best indicator – NindUX was developed as a proactive research tool of indoor air problems

A start up company from Espoo, Finland, NindUX Oy was born from the observation that Finland lacks a tool for systematic monitoring of indoor air quality and changes for the municipalities.

In Finland, local decision-makers struggle with the mold problem in schools and kindergartens worse than ever. The public debate grew especially under the municipal elections in early 2017, and the media are constantly getting news about indoor air related health problems and school children moved to outbound spaces to study.

Up to 30 % of municipalities say that the indoor air situation in schools is now challenging or even difficult.

According to the OAJ (Trade Union of Education) survey, about one third of teachers report that they have done observations of moisture damages at their own workplace in day care center or school. There were over 4 000 teachers from day care centers to the universities who responded to the indoor air poll conducted by the Educational Trade Union and the University of  Turku.

It has been clarified that only one of the 15 high schools in the city of Helsinki is worthy of study, and a great renovation round is expected. In the high schools, in addition to the tightness of space, indoor air problems have been identified.

Nonetheless, municipal decision-making does not use customer experience information as a basis for decision-making (eg Kero: Knowledge in Property Management and Correction Projects). As the indoor climate problem expands, municipalities need information to determine what are the most urgent targets for renovations and where money and resources must be targeted. In the study Keys to a Healthy and Safe Building (Avaimet terveelliseen ja turvalliseen rakennukseen) by THL (National Institute For Health And Welfare), Tampere University of Technology and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, it is stated that municipalities need an operating model for continuous data collection for predictive real estate management.

CEO of NindUX, Simo Laasonen found working for more than seven years on indoor air issues that the municipalities have little or no knowledge of how to predict and monitor indoor air problems. In September 2016, NindUX, one man’s effort for a healthy indoor climate, emerged as a solution, and replaced the problem of municipalities with the lack of customer experience.

Laasonen developed NindUX, user-centered indoor air poll for municipalities as knowledge management tool. Similar inquiries have already been made in Finland, but Laasonen is convinced that problems will only be identified if monitoring of indoor air quality is regular and systematic.

Laasonen received help from a number of specialists who formed an independent indoor air working team for the development of the user survey. The group involved, among others, Tiina Tuomela, a specialist in pediatrics, researcher Mari Turunen (THL), and other indoor air specialists.

The principle of NindUX user survey is that the best indicators of indoor air quality and its changes are the users of the premises, ie pupils, teachers and staff of schools and kindergartens. It has been observed in various studies that since the third grade students are able to describe their symptoms and their condition reliably.

The reliability of user surveys comes from many aspects. Usually, the response rate for email or online queries is only about 30%. NindUX conducts an on-site survey at a school or kindergarten, with a response rate of up to 90%. The survey takes just a few minutes and does not require any effort from teaching staff. The users of the premises – the pupils or the staff – respond to an easy questionnaire on a tablet provided by a NindUX representative.

The results are available to subscribers in the municipal indoor air group in almost real time. The data is automatically transferred to a report where all the properties and their results are easily comprehensible in color codes.

NindUX is therefore intended for continuous use as a knowledge management tool. From the system, decision-makers can monitor the development of the indoor climate of real estate on a per-site basis from their own computer. This is how municipalities can quickly and sensibly make decisions on where to focus on renovating and thus contribute to the cost-effective use of repair supplies.

Because NindUX is always used to examining the indoor air quality and experiences at hand, it also eliminates unnecessary worries about indoor air problems and the results can also demonstrate if the air quality of the property is good and there are no problems.

The proactive research of indoor air problems and the regular monitoring of the indoor air quality transfer responsibilities from individual school children and parents to where it belongs, i.e. to municipal health care, and to the indoor air group specialists.
