Helping to advance health worldwide – Dutch solutions for vital societies

The Netherlands will be represented at the Upgraded Life Festival held in Helsinki on the 31st of May. Several organisations from the innovative Dutch health sector will be present. The Netherlands has a strong position in Life Sciences & Health, but why are the Dutch so passionate about health?

A better, longer life

Our population is ageing. As we are getting older, we want to spend our extra years in good health. Unfortunately, ‘healthy’ life years do not increase in proportion to the higher life expectancy. In order to increase our national health, we need innovative, smart solutions. Creating solutions for health-related problems have become a priority for the Dutch society. This has led to major innovations inareas ranging from wearables to healthy ageing or nanotechnology.

Working together

The Netherlands is home to high-tech research institutes, innovative startups and amazing companies that work together to develop groundbreaking innovations for the international healthcare market. Over 34.000 people work full-time to discover new grounds on Life Sciences & Health. The Dutch government has designated Life Sciences & Health as one of nine ‘top sectors’, setting up educational programs for students and helping corporations in a highly competitive economy.

Health is not an isolated sector. It is closely related to other key sectors such as IT, or logistics. Dutch interconnectivity makes for excellent cooperation between different aspects that border the health sector. This interconnectivity exists between different sectors, such as logistics, pharma, software development and data storage, but also within a sector through intensive cooperation between companies and knowledge institutes.

This cooperation is regionally clustered. Amsterdam, for example, is home to a thriving biomedical sector. Groningen is known for its research on Healthy Ageing and the Eindhoven ‘Brainport’ is home to a booming start-up climate in pharma, food & health, and medicinal technology. Universities, hospitals and companies work together to create the best possible answer to various health-related questions.
